I read with great interest on the current issues published in today’s newspaper, and among the issues discussed that piqued my interest was regarding the unemployed graduate's plight. |

United Voice started in 1995 when 3 volunteers recruited a small group of persons with learning disabilities and formed what was then known as the Self Advocacy Group. The group's name was changed to United Voice in 2000. For 10 years since its inception, United Voice was sponsored by Dignity & Services, an organization that also advocates for the rights of persons with learning disabilities. However, since 12 July 2005, United Voice was registered as a society and became an independent entity. At the time of writing, United Voice had a total of 60 members. Needs: United Voice's monthly operating expenses amount to approximately RM12,000. It has 5 full time staff and 1 part time staff. United Voice is in need of regular funds to cover its monthly expenditure and is also sourcing funds to purchase a van to provide transportation services for its members. United Voice also welcomes donations in kind. Contact Details: 603 Jalan 17/12. 46400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor Tel: 03-79588069 Cheques Made Payable to: United Voice

There are 3 reasons that postulated such a plight as per suggested by the public which was: the attitude of the youth and graduates, the Malaysian education system, and the lack of communication skills, that does not favor effective inter-personal communication skills. There are strong opinions that the lack of passion in the graduates to push themselves to constantly pursue the opportunities available to them is one culprit that causes them to still be unemployed. As a fresh graduate myself, I find lots of employment opportunities, educational opportunities, and opportunities to undertake non-academic self-enrichment activities. Myself, like all my peers who went to national schools, and varsities, were all given the opportunity to participate and pursue in activities that could have helped us develop the essential skills (debate clubs, Interact Clubs, Toastmasters, etc.) and I can't recall anyone who genuinely wanted to take part ever being denied the chance. But I do know of many, who despite knowing the benefits of such participation chose not to, for a variety of reasons or just attributing to the 'lack of passion' in the individual. The goal of any democratic government and society of any market based economy is to ensure the creation of a society where every citizen, regardless of ethnicity or class status has equal opportunities to succeed; and NOT where everyone succeeds equally. So maybe the question is how effective has our society been in providing our youth with such opportunities? The bottom line is this; Unemployment is a serious and complex problem, and it is caused by both institutional (government/educational policy) as well as socio-cultural reasoning (family values, tradition, 'Asian' conservatism) issues. These are all concepts that are difficult to define qualitatively and quantitatively in its’ effect on unemployed graduates. We as Malaysians must do our bit in ensuring the country continuously prosper with the people desiring to passionately grow with the country.

" You see the heart is a strange part of the body. It knows no end when searching for that goal in my mind, that special person or even that dream beyond ourselves. Even if the mind gives up, the heart will continue to beat on and continue to search even long after we say to ourselves, we give up. Use the heart. For it will give you strength, when you have none, the will, to remind you why you started and love for what you are doing when passion is not enough. As long as we are breathing, the heart beats on. If it refuses to give up...then why should we?" Samuel K. Aidoo |
