Personal Coaching for Results

Author:

Lou Tice with Joyce Quick

This is one of the most interesting reads I have encountered in years on the subject of Coaching and Mentoring. Lou Tice managed to impart his knowledge and thoughts in 13 carefully organized chapters. The book is distinctively divided into two parts, where Part 1 outlines the personal mastery of a mentor and Part 2 gives in depth coverage on skills required by a mentor.

The uniqueness of this book is that it not only guides the reader to his/her own lifelong growth and development, but it also demonstrates how you can pass on what you have learnt through effective and inspiring mentoring of your employees, colleagues, friends and even children.

From the same author of "What they don’t teach you at Harvard Business School" comes a book on the principles of business. Mark concentrates mainly on the soft aspects of business which is hardly ever emphasized upon, yet is more critical to the success of an individual compared to the ‘hard aspects’.

From Marketing to Leadership, Office Politics to Acquiring a Power Base, Mark dishes out numerous practical principles and examples to showcase what it takes to succeed in the office environment today. A good read with many practical tips however clarity of the writing can be improved as the message he is trying to communicate can be a little muddled at times.

This book is probably one of the most comprehensive with regard to DiSC, a personality test. It explains in detail the various personalities that we adopt depending on our environment. Each of these personalities has its own characteristic with their own preferences for doing things, acting or reacting to a situation. The book also provides a simple but accurate test for us to determine our own personality and for us to learn more about ourselves. More importantly it teaches us how to react to other personalities, for us to develop our own skills in handling others. A must read for anyone interested in personality profiling.

A good read for both employers and employees in the service industry. The author shared his experiences as the Chairman of The ServiceMaster Company, where he managed 200,000 employees. The key success factor in a service organization is the commitment in developing its People. The management techniques and ideas provided are based on the success story of The ServiceMaster Company as one of the leading service company in the world.

In my opinion, some of the “Twenty-One Principles of Leadership at ServiceMaster” provided in the Appendix are good principles to be adopted by organizations moving from the manufacturing based to the service oriented economy.

Successful Selling With NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)

Publisher:

Thorsons
No of pages:

This book is written to explain the importance of NLP in sales and how one can influence others to accept what they have to sell. However, the book is nothing new compared to many other books that speak about selling skills and persuasive communication skills.

The focus of the book is very theoretical and it does not provide useful tips on strengthening an individual’s selling ability. This is another one of the many selling books that require a lot of help in trying to position itself to the market. NLP is just a tagline used to better “influence” the market.

In short, this book is not a recommended read.

It is surprising how the most fundamental principles are usually the most difficult to practice. Since young we have been told by our parents that to succeed in life we need to have passion, we must learn to communicate well, we must be fair to all, learn continuously and be inquisitive and not be afraid to make mistake. However these principles seems to dissipate when we begin working or running our own company.

Many a times, companies forget that the success of any organization lies in the employees. It is extremely important that the company captures the heart of their employees, communicating with them meaningfully, treats them as partners not slaves, continuous develop them for the benefit of all and allowing them the freedom to make decision and take actions.

This practical and extremely useful book shares with us how certain organizations are practicing these 5 simply key principles in their work place, aka it works. These organizations are allowing the natural force in the company, the employee, to drive it.
